The city of Maaloula is situated in the only region where western Aramaic is still spoken. The inhabitants of Maaloula are Arameans and they belong to the Melkite Greek Catholic Church or the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch. There are two important monasteries in Maaloula: Mar Sarkis and Mar Taqla.
